Trying my new coat on I can definately advise that size 40 equates to a generous size UK 16, enough space to have that thick jumper underneath and still have that room to breath comfort. A size 38 would have been perfect, but I didn't want that cramped feeling with layers underneath. I was impressed by the weight of the coat, and it has that comforting new wool stiffness, that you know will be great after it's relaxed after wearing for a while.
