Great trousers
After trying on 8 different pairs of walking trousers in a store I settled on these Ortlers and one other (Rab Alpine Trek). I found that they are generously sized and the best fit was a pair a size smaller than I'd normally wear. The Ortlers are a great fit and (for me) a suitable weight for all but the coldest UK weather. After one recent outing during which I experienced winds of up to 50mph, temp of +4 deg C and a heavy 5-minute rain squall, I am very impressed. They are nicely stretchy with handy drawcords on the bottom hems of the legs which enable a good seal around the ankles or footwear. They were warm enough and I didn't feel any uncomfortable wind penetration. During the rain squall, the water beaded on the surface and most ran off the trousers with no penetration at all, very surprising given the strength of the wind. Any residual water dried off within about 15 minutes of the rain stopping.

Unlike some other walking trousers, Ortlers come without a belt but the...

Comfortable and a good fit
Berghaus describe these trousers as three season. They are showerproof nylon with 10% Spandex so they are stretchy, and cut for "active fit" which means that they aren't baggy nor tight. They have a 40mm deep elasticated waist band and will also take a belt upto 50mm wide. The trouser hems have draw strings and toggles. Warmer weather is catered for by a 210mm zipped opening in each thigh for ventilation. Fortunately these openings have mesh to prevent the passage of wasps and other things! A typical weight is around 450 grams which may give an idea of the density of the material, which seems so far to be windproof.
